The World Golf Championship Dell Technologies Match Play betting preview

An elite field has assembled in Austin, Texas for the final edition of the WGC Dell Technologies Match Play.

Its loss will mark the end of elite-level head-to-head golf on the PGA Tour schedule, a decision that will be breaking the hearts of traditionalists across the globe.

The competitors themselves are a little less downbeat because they’ve never entirely cared for the volatile nature of match play golf and Tiger Woods, for example, was always very ambiguous about it.

It’s also a pity to be losing the venue because Austin Country Club is a fine test with a stunning setting in front of the Colorado River and the Pennybacker Bridge.

Tyrrell Hatton to win

Winners of this event have tended to have two things in common: great current form and a proven record on Pete Dye-designed golf courses.

Englishman Tyrrell Hatton has finished in the top eight in five of his last seven starts and his most recent example was when second in THE PLAYERS Championship at Sawgrass two weeks ago.

That is a Pete Dye layout, as is this week’s venue.

Hatton is also the only player on the PGA Tour currently ranking top 20 for Strokes Gained Off the Tee, Approach and Putting for the season.

Take the hint and back him each way with Spreadex offering 22/1 for four places.

Matt Kuchar to beat Viktor Hovland

The action begins on Wednesday and Norway’s Viktor Hovland faces a real banana skin in the shape of the veteran Matt Kuchar.

Hovland is a classy prospect but he has won three and lost three of his matches in this event at Austin.

Kuchar, in contrast, is an absolute course and format specialist.

Since 2019 he has played 14 matches, winning 11 times and his only two losses were to the eventual champions.

At first glance, his form is not great but he has played well on courses he likes in the last 18 months and he can repeat that this week.

Chris Kirk to win

This course has been overpowered by big-hitters but canny performers have also thrived, most spectacularly the three-time finalist Kevin Kisner.

Chris Kirk is a little like him in style of play and he’s bang in form with a trio of top three finishes in 2023, including victory at the Honda Classic.

He’s also tasted victory in Texas in the past – another good pointer for the week – and he made the last eight on his only previous start at Austin.

Back him each way at 70/1 with 888sport which pays out with a semi-final appearance.
