Six people were killed and at least nine were injured in a shooting and stabbing attack in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, Israeli police have said.

TV footage showed two men getting off at a light rail station in the Jaffa district of the city and appearing to fire point blank at people in the area.

Emergency services said they had received reports of gunfire injuries shortly after 7pm local time.

Israel’s Magen David Adom emergency response group said some of the injured casualties were in critical condition.

Israeli police said both of the attackers were “neutralised”. Israeli media reported the men were killed by a passing security guard.

One of the men was armed with an assault rifle, while the other man had a knife. They shot and stabbed several of their victims aboard the train and then continued attacks on the street outside, police added.

Neither the attackers or the victims were identified. Police said the attackers were not Israeli citizens.

The attack took place as alerts sounded over an incoming Iranian missile attack, with the Israeli military warning the public to shelter in safe rooms.

Local resident Michael Yemini, 32, said warnings over the gunmen and the missile attack came in quick succession in his Jaffa neighbourhood, where he lives about half a kilometre from where the shooting took place.

“We have a WhatsApp group for the neighbourhood and people said that it’s a terror attack so stay at home,” he told i. “Two minutes later there were a lot of sirens of police and special forces and ambulances.”

“Then, about 20 minutes later, the IDF said go to the safe room because of the missile attack from Iran… I was a little bit shocked but I’m okay.”
