On Wednesday, the Australian cricket team triumphed over Team India in the One Day International (ODI) series with a 2-1 victory. The final match, held in Chennai, saw Australia clinch the series decider with a 21-run win over India. The defeat marked India’s first ODI series loss on home soil since 2019, as the team’s performance was lacklustre, particularly in their batting display throughout the three matches. One of the players who faced the brunt of criticism for India’s poor showing was Suryakumar Yadav. Yadav’s inability to score runs was a significant disappointment for India, as he was dismissed for a first-ball duck in all three matches.
Mitchell Starc was the main tormentor for Yadav, dismissing him on both occasions with leg-before-wicket (LBW) decisions. Despite being demoted in the batting order to number seven for the final match, Suryakumar Yadav’s misfortunes continued as Ashton Agar bowled him out with the first ball he faced.

India’s inability to score runs and their over-reliance on a few key players were apparent throughout the series, and it ultimately proved to be their downfall. Although there were some standout performances from individuals, such as KL Rahul and Virat Kohli, the team’s collective effort was not enough to overcome Australia’s well-rounded unit. It was a disappointing result for India, but they will undoubtedly look to regroup and come back stronger in future matches.
Ajay Jadeja Backs Suryakumar Yadav Amidst Criticism
Having suffered a triple duck in the ODI series against Australia, Suryakumar Yadav’s position in India’s fifty-over format is under scrutiny, especially considering his last 50+ score in an ODI came in February 2022. Despite this, former India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has expressed support for Yadav, arguing that it was an ill-conceived move by the team management to send him in to bat at number 7 during the final match.

“You played Suryakumar Yadav, some people thought that he shouldn’t play, but you did back him. But you also had a doubt, that’s a fact. It was visible through your decision. You thought ‘he isn’t in form, so we can’t send him at this moment because he is failing against swing’. When he came at the end, the game became even more difficult.”
“When you’re going through a good time, it doesn’t matter if you make the batter wait. But if the form isn’t good and you let the player wait for his batting, his mind would run in different directions. He is a human being!”
Suryakumar Yadav despite the heavy criticism will be looking to bounce back stronger as the player eyes the Indian Premier League that kickstarts on the 31st of March with the defending champion Gujarat Titans locking horns against the four-time champions Chennai Super Kings in the opening fixture.
