Adnan Sami, who once weighed nearly 230 kilos, recently opened up about losing 120 kilos. “In 2006, doctors had given me an ultimatum — six months to live — because I was grossly overweight. I was 230 kilos. It was a do-or-die situation. [But once I did] People were wondering what I was up to (for weight loss). There were all kinds of speculations — if I was in love or was preparing for some film role — but, it was none of that. I was doing it for survival. I was doing it because I wanted to live. There was no better motivation than that,” said Sami, whose social media reflects his weight loss transformation over the years.
Speaking to Humans of Bombay‘s Karishma Mehta on their video channel, the Indi-pop singer popular for his all-time hits like Tera Chehra, Kabhi To Nazar Milao, Sun Zara, etc, further shared that there also came a period of self-doubt. “A lot of people I know had given up on me, thinking I couldn’t do it. I don’t blame them. It is a herculean task; a huge mountain to climb. Even I didn’t know whether I would be able to do it because it seemed impossible at that particular moment in time,” said Sami.
But he stressed that this is not how he was. “I was fit and thin in my teens. I used to play rugby, squash, horseback riding, and polo. Mentally too, I was not accepting my weight either, which is why ultimately, I did manage to lose it. I consistently want to change things in life,” said Sami, who became a citizen of India in 2016 after giving up his Pakistani citizenship and was awarded Padma Shri for his contribution to the field of art in January 2020.
How did he do it?
Recalling the role played by his nutritionist, the musician said, “I was fortunate to come across a wonderful nutritionist who walked me through it. She advised me to take small steps rather than looking at it as a bulk. That’s what I focused on. I took one step at a time. I never thought I would end up losing so much weight, almost 120 kilos. It is difficult.”
Recounting his own struggles with multiple diets, Sami shared, “I myself have tried to go on a countless number of diets; but I could not. So, even I was not sure whether I will be able to stick with it. However, moving on, I changed my lifestyle.”
