HAYWARD, Wis. (WBAY) -Leaders held a virtual live Q&A Monday night, regarding the status of the 50th Annual Slumberland American Birkebeiner, the largest cross country ski marathon in North America. The event is set to take place on Feb. 24 in Hayward, Wisconsin.
The Birkebeiner will continue this year with some adjustments, factoring in warmer temperatures and little snowfall. At the Q&A, organizers announced the multiple Birkebeiner races will be held, just on a 10-kilometer course. The marathon will also include “open track” days, which will allow skate and classic marathon participants to ski their 30K races.
The other additional races and events that are traditionally held will still occur, but at different times.
Elite skiers from around the world, such as Olympic gold medalist Jesse Diggens, will be competing. For the 50th anniversary event, more than 7,500 people registered, making it the earliest registration deadline in the event’s five-decade history.
The marathon will run from Feb. 21-25; you can visit their website for more information.
